Purpose of the Role:
With direction from the Head of Content Project Management (HoCPM) or Content Project Team Manager (CPTM) and in collaboration with Content Strategists (CS), develop & produce competitive, innovative content for new or revised products (both local language and translation/adaptation as required) with focus on compelling electronic formats and functionality, that meet market needs and are designed to drive usage and grow market share. Manage assigned projects from contract stage through content development and production phases to delivery of files in required format, ensuring that they are produced on time and within budget, to meet approved proposal vision for the products concerned. Incorporate new processes, e-workflows, and technology as appropriate supporting migration to an eFirst workflow with authors in the creation of e-content. Serve as primary contact for authors, scientific editors, managing translators, suppliers and independent contractors (ICs) to develop and produce and manage the content through to final product delivery.
Responsibilities:
1: Ensure timely delivery of complete and well-prepared material for release which adheres to proposal and appropriate quality benchmarks
Help Content Strategist (CS) in project definition (e- and print format): help to plan content formats, organization and content templates; provide input costs for non standard projects at proposal stage; generate ideas for features and product functionality that aid usability
Manage on a day-to-day basis the development and production of under-contract titles to ensure delivery on schedule and to required standard that adheres to agreed proposal vision
Brief authors/editors/translators on all aspects of writing to deliver print and electronic material to required standard, vision, budget and schedule (including chapter level abstracts and key words)
Brief authors in e-workflows and train them to use the available tools (e.g. EMSS, author template etc) where required and possible
Actively manage and adhere to agreed schedule for content delivery, illustration and proofs as per contract
Prepare relevant material for contributors, and establish and maintain relationships with authors, CS and contributors via regular contact during the writing stage, aiding scientific editors if required in soliciting contributors
Ensure where required all contributor contracts for edited works are returned before copyedit stage and that relevant payments are made according to contracts
Review sample material from authors/editors at all stages of writing and give feedback as necessary to ensure guidelines followed
Ensure author adheres to selected design from the global standard templates to maximize cost savings and ensure the book is POD and e compatible
Maintain accurate and up-to-date information on PPM (and other appropriate local and global systems)
2: Review and prepare content for delivery to freelancers, suppliers or vendors
Prepare for and attend gate meeting with CS at agreed point to sign off on delivery of the proposed vision at this stage of development and production
Evaluate submitted material, work with authors/solicit external content edit if required to ensure adherence to proposal vision and compliance with content, format and size requirements
Ensure information in PPM, and other global / local systems, is updated as required
Ensure that all required permissions for print and electronic rights have been obtained (ideally by author) and relevant information stored in Permissions Database. For 3rd party permissions within Elsevier translations liaise with Chennai team for permissions clearance as required
Manage artwork process with authors, illustrators and vendors as required, ensuring that all delivered artwork meets technical and product requirements
In partnership with Digital Media team and/or local vendors ascertain that all files for electronic ancillaries are delivered in required format, are complete and to standard
Adhere to service level tiering to ensure content is produced in line with expectation of authors and content strategists as set out at proposal.
3: Liaising with freelancers/suppliers as necessary and monitoring performance
Liaising with external providers (translation/ copyediting/ typesetting/ proofreading/ indexers / data capture/ developers) as necessary and monitoring cost/ quality/ timeliness of work in line with Elsevier global standards and agreed tariffs (where in place)
Ensure effective and efficient proof management and correction in relevant formats with freelancers and suppliers as appropriate, following agreed HCM workflows and QC guidelines
Handle author liaison and queries as required during production phase
Apply SLAs and where appropriate negotiate and manage delivery schedules with vendors
Enforce QC guidelines
Negotiate and agree costs with ICs or suppliers for tasks and work where no tariff is available, where necessary consulting global procurement.
Ensure that materials/ projects are correctly stored after publication according to global guidelines.
Utilize available toolsets both in-house and at vendors to optimize productivity, efficiency and costs
Ensure dataset deliveries to EW/VTW are completed, where necessary instruct resupply.
Liaise with EW/VTW, Global Archive and other data repositories to execute data conversions, retrieval and custom data handling, where necessary negotiating and agreeing bespoke timelines and costs
Maintain book product spec data accurately to ensure titles can be manufactured by ORF centrally and efficiently; liaise with ORF to agree and meet required print PDF delivery dates
4: Ensure finished product meets market needs and budget is adhered to
Monitor quality and schedule of art programmer
Monitor quality throughout delivery and production to ensure finished publication meets multi-channel market needs through logical placement of text, tables, illustrations and other features
Advise on production issues, dealing with quality issues as they arise
Coordinate design and execution of cover, branding and interior styling
Ensure that electronic ancillaries publish according to schedule and are maintained to standard
5: Contribute to HCM wider optimization, continuous improvement and workflow projects
As directed by HoCPM or CPTM, participate in projects aimed at improving process, performance and delivery
Ensure that day-to-day activities adhere to best practices, documented workflows and expected standards
As directed by HoCPM implement workflow changes and improvements and measure results and outcomes
Maintain accurate records and supply data for reporting or other purposes as required.
Complete skills development/learning courses as opportunity or necessity arises to maintain core HCM and CPM competencies and skills (e.g. problem solving skills, lean six sigma yellow belt)

- 5 or more years experience in STM publishing preferably in production, project management or editing
- BA/BS degree in relevant local language, science, or related area preferred (or local equivalent)
