Job Description Sr. MTS, Tanzu Edge - Tanzu Kubernetes Grid
The Elevator Pitch: Why would you enjoy this new opportunity??
Enterprises are running mission critical software in more places than ever before -- in their datacenter, hybrid cloud, public cloud, and at the edge.??In order to catalyze Enterprise transformation through?software, VMware envisions a world where Kubernetes?is as available as a utility like electricity customers need to deploy a consistent Kubernetes grid across all their operational environments. ?Tanzu?Kubernetes Grid (TKG) provides Enterprise organizations with a consistent, upstream compatible, Kubernetes substrate across SDDC, Public Cloud, and Edge environments that is ready for end-user workloads and ecosystem integrations.
VMware Tanzu team is looking for engineers to start the new Tanzu Edge team in our Bangalore office. Edge deployments of our Tanzu platform, with a focus on retail sites, is becoming a major focus of both VMware and the Tanzu product.
In this role, you will be collaborating with the larger Tanzu team to build, maintain, and release features in our Kubernetes product for Edge deployments.
What is the ?primary need, technical challenge, and/or problem you will be responsible for?
As one of the early members of the Tanzu Edge team, you will put your technical, organizational, and interpersonal skills to work in launching this effort. You will set up the infrastructure, help build the local team, and perform the hands-on work for delivering Tanzu Edge solutions to our customers.
Success in the Role: What are the performance goals over the first 6-12 months, you will work toward completing?
Support the vSphere ROBO (remote office, branch office) deployment topology. This is a hub-and-spoke topology that is well-validated across VMware.
Reduce the size of TKG to compete more effectively with embedded Kubernetes deployments
Support a single-node deployment of TKG
Bring-your-own-Node. Sufficient demand exists for an operational model that does not involve vSphere in any way that we are engaging in exploration actively. Well begin with a POC, and explore delivery subsequent to that.
Integrate TKG with VMware products designed to connect people and resources across multiple physical locations.
What type of work will you be doing? What? assignments or requirements will you be performing on a regular basis?
Understand non-datacenter deployments and design solutions to improve Kubernetes in these environments
Explore different ways of deploying and managing Kubernetes
Understand how VMware leverages the Kubernetes Cluster API for cluster deployment
Create internal test frameworks and validation to ensure that non-datacenter deployments work well
Reproduce and evaluate customer configurations in lab environments
Build instrumentation to measure and observe Kubernetes deployment processes
Collaborating with functional teams across VMware and with the Kubernetes community to improve Kubernetes for non-datacenter deployments
Test and explore new deployment topologies and design solutions to any problems that you find
Work with functional teams to improve TKG for edge use cases
Design and implement features, triage, review and respond to incoming issues and pull requests, ensure high code quality and correctness through testing and factoring, and maintain documentation, release notes, etc.
Participate in reviews, discussions in the slack, mailing lists and meetings.
Work in a distributed team across multiple geographical locations.
Contribute to upstream Kubernetes projects wherever necessary
What is leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?
The hiring manager for this role is Sudheesh Sudhakaran, Director of Engineering. Sudheesh recently joined VMware with the mission to create the TKG engineering team in India. He spent more than 12 years with VMware in various engineering roles prior to becoming the Head of Engineering and India MD for OVHcloud last 3 years.
Kubernetes upstream team in India will work closely with the Tanzu global upstream team and the global K8s community.
