Job Summary

Purpose of the Role:

With direction from the Content Development Manager and in collaboration with content strategists, develops competitive, innovative content for new and revised products--with focus on compelling electronic formats and functionality--that meet market needs and are designed to drive usage and grow market share. Manages content development of assigned projects from pre-contract stage through transmittal to Production or other vendor; incorporating new processes, e-workflows, and technology as appropriate. Serves as primary contact for authors and subject matter experts (SMEs) throughout publication process. Manages the most complex or challenging content sets. Trains new content development specialists and content coordinators as needed.

Responsibilities:

  • Consults with content strategists, sales/marketing, customers; attends national society meetings and author meetings; conducts market research on selected projects.
  • Analyze competing products with content strategists; drafts strategy plans for revised and new content; works with content strategists and authors to plan content formats & delivery, organization and content templates;
  • Advises on content writing and development to yield best online discovery;
  • Participates in planning and implementation of content delivery and updates for ClinicalKey, Expert Consult, and other platforms;
  • Guides and generates ideas for e-functionality and features that aid usability and optimize customer experience.
  • Suggest materials for inclusion in promotional collateral; review copy for accuracy and completeness.
  • Develops and communicates guidelines for writers regarding content and e content enhancements, formats, and extent, number of illustrations, and reference style;
  • Reviews all stages of writing to ensure that guidelines have been followed; monitors budget; works with writers to correct deviations from plan/vision.
  • Troubleshoots problems arising during production; drives to achieve schedules; ensures that all required permissions for print and electronic rights are obtained; continues to interact with writers and SMEs as needed.
  • Evaluate content; works with subject matter experts (SMEs) to modify as necessary to comply with content, format and extent requirements for both electronic and print use;
  • Review materials for organization and clarity; ensures e-rights are secured for all content assets; checks for and obtains missing materials; completes transmittal forms; inserts and updates information in PPM;
  • Evaluates quality of illustrations/video and obtains better when necessary; ensures that final transmitted content represents the best option for the customer and will move smoothly through production, e-production, multimedia or vendor process.
  • Ensures that proper elements exist to allow for e-content asset development, conversion and reuse as necessary.
  • Coordinates design and execution of cover and branding and interior style for e-products and print products;
  • Develops sample instructional materials illustrating intended formats and special format needs for e-assets for distribution to authors and for promotional purposes;
  • Works with art/illustrations and multimedia departments to monitor quality and schedule of art and video programs; works with e-books and e-production groups to ensure that enhancements and assets are mapped to content properly and render correctly;
  • Evaluates illustrations and other assets and suggests improvements or approaches
  • Define deliverables and key result areas; implement skills training and development programs for direct reports as appropriate; monitor results and track progress; champion change

Required Skills, Experience & Education:

  • Thorough familiarity with requirements for content to move smoothly through publishing process internally or with vendors.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage e-development and assignments for online or e-book development projects.
  • Must have proven ability to work collaboratively with vendors and internal stakeholders.
  • High comfort level and experience with technology.
  • Experience managing writers/SMEs.
  • Experience in managing multiple, high-priority projects.
  • Knowledge of medical, surgical and or medical student product markets preferred. Familiarity with acceptable formats for digital text and art.
  • Facility with Word, Excel, and internet research.
  • Knowledge of e-devices and e-content workflow preferred.
  • Basic to intermediate level understanding of EPUB, HTML5, XML as they relate to e-book publishing process.
  • BA/BS in English, Project Management, e-Learning, or related areas;
  • 3+ years working on or supporting technology projects and/or development content for print and e-book formats.
  • Minimum of two years experience as a content development specialist.
