Job Description - Data Engineer
Overall Experience: 2-4 years
Job Responsibilities
Design, develop, and deploy data solutions for Big Data/BI projects for Pearson Global Product
Design, develop, and deploy data integrations, reporting with cloud based database technologies, and ETL (e.g., Talend for Big Data)processes
Understand and apply cloud-based data technologies to build out a scalable yet simple and fast Data Ecosystem infrastructure
Design and develop web-based visualizations and other data analysis solutions for data analysts and business users
Develop, maintain, and optimize the Data Ecosystem through the entire data lifecycle, from data modeling to consumer output
Understand, validate, and refine business requirements by collaborating with product management and business stakeholders
Develop in-depth understanding of underlying data, data structures, and business use cases to ensure data delivery meets business needs for an industry leader in education
Author and modify simple and complex SQL queries for standard and ad-hoc reporting needs
Review and modify queries and database structures using database optimization techniques, indexing, and query optimization for efficient performance of data solutions
Debug, monitor, and troubleshoot data solutions and fix root cause of issues
Develop and execute unit tests for individual modules within data solutions
Collaborate with QA engineers to develop and automate system and data testing
Contribute to an ongoing, system-wide effort to maintain well defined, high quality, predictable data which conforms to Pearson data models and data capture standards
Collaborate with internal application teams to continuously improve the Data Ecosystem
Maintain an accurate and useful Data Dictionary, and promote its use by system stakeholders
Work effectively in a fast-paced, Agile development environment
Mentor junior Data Engineering team members on a daily basis and provide guidance and assistance in members career development
Job Requirements
Education
Ideal candidate must possess at least a 4-year Bachelors Degree in Computer Science/Information Technology or equivalent. Relevant prior experience in software development can be demonstrated in the absence of a computer science major.
Experience
- Minimum of two years in a Data Engineer role with a background in data technologies/business intelligence/data warehousing and experience in designing and developing data solutions within a large-scale environment
Required Skills
Relational DBMSs
Very good knowledge of SQL querying
Rich experience in relational data modeling
Good work experience in writing complex queries and stored procedures
Good knowledge in query performance tuning
Strong skills and work experience with relational database like Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, MySql, etc., and ability to work with multiple sources and formats of data
Ability to carry out monitoring, tuning, and database performance analysis.
Experience in developing logical,physical and conceptual data models.
Dimensional Data Modeling
Good work experience in developing data models and data warehouses
Experience in designing and developing dimensional models for a business process
ETL Engineering
Good knowledge in designing and implementing ETL procedures to intake data from internal and outside sources, as well as ensuring data is verified and quality is checked
Experience in developing ETL solutions for Big Data integrations
Good experience in integrating data from relational data sources (Oracle, MSSQL, MySql)
Hands on experience in integrating data from object-based data sources (MongoDB, Cassandra, DynamoDb)
Experience in integrating data from flat files
Experience in integrating data from JSON structures
Experience in optimizing ETL jobs and workflows
Experience in working with ETL job scheduling tools
Desired Skills
Working knowledge of Big Data / cloud-based / columnar databases (such as Hbase, MongoDB, AWS Redshift, etc.)
Experience in scripting languages like Python, Ruby, Perl, etc.
Experience in ETL tools like SSIS, Talend, Pentaho, etc., is a plus
