Job Summary

Mechanical Design Engineer

Mandatory qualifications:

  • Designs major portions of an opto-mechanical system, or technically advanced prototype/specific optical payload products.

  • Develops or improves products and facilitates manufacturing operations.

  • Develops basic data and makes preliminary layouts, sketches, and notes necessary to present design proposals. Investigates pertinent design factors such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials and equipment, interchangeability, replaceability, strength-weight efficiency, and contractual specification requirements and cost.

  • Coordinates with other organizations affected by design development.

  • Makes layouts of assemblies and details parts of devices, mechanisms, structures, and products.

  • Checks completed layouts and drawings for clarity, completeness, conformity to standards, procedures, specifications, and accuracy of calculations and dimensioning.

  • Identifies design errors, omissions, and other deficiencies, and recommends revisions and/or improvements in design layout to responsible engineers or designers.

  • Works with other Engineers to develop a better understanding of the unique aspects of Opto-Mechanical design features and constraints.

Candidates knowledge in:

  • Electro-Optics/NIR/SWIR/MWIR/LWIROptics Lens and Mirror Alignment

  • Focal Planes Integration

  • Thermal/Environmental Analysis

Qualifications

  • Technical proficiency in mechanical design layout tools (Solid works, Creo, etc)

  • Understanding of or willingness to learn attributes necessary to mount optical elements without unacceptable distortion.

  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn unique design aspects of opto-mechanical systems.

  • Self-starter with initiative and tenacity to meet deadlines with quality products.

  • Team-player with the ability to work with a diverse range of individuals. Effective written and verbal communication skills.

  • Technical proficiency in mechanical design layout tools (Solid works, Creo, etc).

  • Experience designing opto-mechanical hardware for high quality EO systems

  • Understanding of optical system layout constraints and interactions.

  • Demonstrated potential to advance in technical and programmatic responsibilities supported by collaborations with subject matter experts in the field and challenging program achievements.

  • Knowledge of Optical Design software such as Zemax, Code V, ASAP.
