Job Summary
As a Manager within the Data Science function, you ll lead a team of advanced analytics professionals as they leverage a world-class financial data asset to (a) perform in-depth, consumer-level analytics, (b) lead big data research and discovery projects, (c) increase overall system accuracy, (d) design and execute operational tests, and (e) automate important (but repetitive) tasks. In addition, you ll oversee the design and execution of operational tests and provide recommendations based on careful analysis, solid business acumen, and superior problem-solving skills. The ability to inspire, develop, and manage staff is essential, as are solid project management skills. You should enjoy turning data and analytic results into digestible and engaging stories as well as working closely with colleagues to identify high-value opportunities. Your track record of nurturing analytic talent, combined with your strong analytic training, superior ambiguity tolerance, and hands-on approach to solving problems, will mark you as an ideal candidate for this role.
Job Duties
Build, develop, and manage a high-performing team of 3-8 data scientists and/or analysts through direct coaching and mentorship focused on analytical best practices, data visualization, storytelling, and personal career development
Provide hands-on guidance as your team builds, enhances, and maintains predictive models focused on data recognition and categorization, credit risk and fraud detection, consumer financial behavior, and feature enhancement
Lead modelling projects, operational tests (e.g., A/B and multivariate), data mining and exploratory work, and the creation of new data assets
Translate unstructured business problems into well-defined and tractable analytic/modelling projects
Provide analytic leadership within the MX community to include (a) statistical and machine learning expertise, (b) project leadership, (c) identifying new opportunities to improve revenue and cost performance through the application of advanced analytic methods, and (d) guiding teammates to reach further and achieve more through the thoughtful application of quantitative tools and reasoning
Work closely with partners and stakeholder groups to understand long-term market needs and drive data initiatives beyond our current product portfolio
Oversee research projects designed to uncover and understand new tools, methods, and approaches that can strengthen MX s data science platform
Develop presentations and memoranda to communicate key messages and findings to colleagues and senior leaders
Job Requirements
Master s degree (Ph.D. preferred) in a quantitative discipline, including significant coursework in statistics, econometrics, or a related field (or equivalent experience); prior exposure to behavioral economics or consumer psychology would be helpful
Practitioner/manager background likely to include (a) 4+ years of hands-on experience building predictive models and (b) 2+ years of experience managing analytic teams as they work to improve core business metrics (e.g., revenue, EBITDA, or net income) preferred; extra points for experience with consumer credit risk, customer satisfaction and engagement, and/or product development
Strong knowledge of one or more structured programming languages for statistical and/or numeric computing (e.g., Python, R, or Scala) and database query languages (e.g., SQL); exposure to modern data science environments (e.g., cloud, Jupyter, and git) would also be beneficial
Expertise with (a) one or more of logistic regression, generalized linear models, or categorical data analysis and (b) multiple machine learning approaches (e.g., k-means clustering, SVM, random forest, or PCA)
Critical thinking skills, intellectual curiosity, and a willingness to keep looking for better solutions
Drive to tackle demanding goals with enthusiasm, tenacity in the face of stubborn obstacles, and interest in pursuing personal and technical development alongside other commitments
Commitment to client needs and satisfaction, humility in the face of constructive, well-meaning feedback, and production of high-quality work that builds trust and confidence with stakeholders
Ability to translate strategic mission objectives into an analytical framework, project plan, and action items

We utilize a hybrid work arrangement style, which may require both local and remote team members to be in the office when necessary, to kick off projects, hold cross team strategy meetings, or complete key deliverables.
