Job Profile:
The Specialist Engineer job is responsible for providing engineering expertise in a specialist Technology engineering area which may include, but is not limited to, data engineering, security engineering, front-end engineering and user experience engineering.
They may be responsible for supporting platforms specific to a HSBC business area that requires specialist Technology engineering expertise; they may be accountable for a product or service within a Technology engineering specialism; or they may provide subject matter expertise to one or more Technology teams on the area of their Technology engineering specialism.
This role will carry out some or all of the following responsibilities:
Design and engineer software with the customer/user experience as a key objective
Actively contributes to Technology Engineering Practice by sharing Subject Matter Expertise from their area of specialism, best practice and learnings
Drives adherence to all standards and policies within their area of Technology Engineering
Delivery and support of data related infrastructure and architecture to optimise data storage and consumption across the bank, including addressing functional and non-functional requirements relevant to data in large applications
Design and develop applications for internal and external users focussing on the interface and front-end usability of the application
Engineer and implement security measures for the protection of internal and external systems, networks, products and services
Establish a digital environment and automate processes to minimize variation and ensure predictable high quality code and data
Provide support in identification and resolution of all incidents associated with the IT service, as directed by leadership of the DevOps team
Ensure service resilience, service sustainability and recovery time objectives are met for all the software solutions delivered
Keep up-to-date and have expertise on current tools, technologies and areas like cyber security and regulations pertaining to aspects like data privacy, consent, data residency etc. that are applicable
Ensuring compliance with all relevant controls and standards
The job role can be broken down to following key points:
Lead, drive and implement highly scalable and complex solutions
Both Immutable Infrastructure, and a strong desire to expand their experience architecting and implementing cloud solutions
May have end to end accountability for one or more products or services within or across GB/GF boundaries, identifying and developing the most appropriate Technology solutions to meet customer needs as part of the Customer Journey and they may have budget, quality and delivery responsibility as appropriate
Liaise with other engineers, architects, and business stakeholders within HSBC and across the industry to understand and drive the product or services direction.
Designing and communicating custom workflows, run books, and response documents
Work with Agile methodology, representing the Pod and Area lead in standups and problem solving meetings
Enables SRE culture through solving problems with engineering.
Ensure service resilience, service sustainability and recovery time objectives are met for all the software solutions delivered.
Create technical test plans and records, including unit and integration tests, within automated test environments to ensure code quality.
Provide support in identification and resolution of all incidents associated with the IT service, as directed by leadership of the DevOps team.
DevOps process involves a lot of development, testing and deployment technologies for developing automated CI/ CD pipelines. Following are some of the famous DevOps tools:
Infrastructure as Code (IAC)
Hypervisors (vmware, Hyper-v)
IAC for AWS, GCP, Azure and Azure stack
Git and GitHub Source code management (Version Control System)
Jenkins Automation server, with plugins built for developing CI/ CD pipelines
Linux Fundamentals and Scripting
PoweShell, Python, Ruby, Java (any two)
REST API
DevOps Soft Skills:
Has experience and affinity to improve team performance
Active listening skills
Mindsets and Behaviors/Self-mastery
Proven experience in Compute, Hypervisors, Storage, Windows, Networks and Linux
Keep up to date and have expertise on current tools, technologies and areas like cyber security and regulations pertaining to aspects like data privacy, consent, data residency etc. that are applicable
Work with industry groups and vendors outside of HSBC to establish and maintain HSBC's involvement and influence.
Accountability for the control and compliance of the engineering process.
Promote innovation and adoption of cutting edgespecialist technologies and practices with the domain.
Promote development of engineers through coaching, and mentoring.
Consult as required in other areas to assist and provide a different perspective to programmes or projects that require it.
