As a seasoned reporter, the bureau chief should be able to lead reporters, assign/re-assign them
beats, stories and ensure proper daily deployment of reporters for coverage and influence the
team in a positive manner.
Should review the daily performance of the individuals and the team on the whole on par with
other media houses. Take corrective steps on deficiency, if any, by guiding the team members.
Should have a track record of identifying important stories, driving coverage and delivering
scoops and enterprise in multiple formats.
Capital coverage will be the primary responsibility of the bureau chief. She/he should be seized of
the national affairs as well.
Should be able to positively respond/perform in a demanding dynamic environment. Should be
able contribute to the national network as and when required.
The bureau chief may personally develop her/his expertise in any of the broad subjects of
reporting besides contributing with the already acquired expertise in the longstanding career.
The bureau chief must employ his expertise to develop professional contacts with subject-matter
experts, government officials, and other important figures to obtain news ahead of others.
Should be able to investigate leads and tips, conduct interviews, research stories, write and edit
news and report on newsworthy events.
A bureau chief may also serve as administrator, working with other newsroom managers to set
targets for the reporting staff and fulfill human resources functions related to training, hiring, and
managing staff.
The bureau chiefs should use their conviction and experience to set the news agenda according
to media conglomerate guidelines, and maintain journalistic integrity, accuracy, and fairness.
