Job Description:

The Maintenance Technician will be responsible for operating, monitoring, and maintaining all the mechanical systems and subsystems which support the critical facility such as Chillers, AHU, CRAH, CRAC, Central Air Handling, Pumps, Piping, etc.

The Maintenance Technician will be permanently resident on site to support the Datacentrer operation team by providing them with technical expertise in the mechanical field related to Mission Critical Facilities. The candidate will be working under the direction of the Datacenter Facility Technical Supervisor and he will be working very closely with the maintenance technicians, engineers, maintenance contractors and vendors to deliver the required preventive maintenance and repairing services related to the mechanical equipments.

The Maintenance Technician must ensure that facilities problems are identified and repaired quickly, that contractors deliver quality services, and that internal customer demands are met.

A good technician develops creative approaches to keep operational costs to a minimum, improve efficiency, and implement consistent maintenance strategies.

Note: This position requires shift work that includes weekends and holidays.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Performs testing of mission critical mechanical systems following written test procedures as part of a normal maintenance program or following modification of systems.

Employs digital testing equipment around high power, high capacity datacentre systems to capture performance information, following all safety procedures.

Operates (or directs vendors in the operation of) mission critical mechanical and/or electrical systems to verify performance to plan and design.

Documents activities and findings for project and maintenance reports, compiling technical data, maintenance records and performance data as developed during operations and maintenance processes.

Applies basic foundation of a mechanical principles, theories and concepts to facility operations and maintenance assignments of limited scope.

Utilizes concepts and theoretical knowledge specific to datacentre systems acquired through specialized training, education or previous experience.

Exercises independent judgment within defined parameters.

Develops expertise and practical knowledge of applications within business environment.

Assists in data gathering by engineers and technicians on assessment assignments, conducting equipment surveys and collecting performance data for report development.

Acts as team member by providing information, analysis and recommendations in support of IT processing systems dependent on facility space, power and cooling systems.

Operate, monitor, maintain, and respond to abnormal conditions in facilities systems. Areas include: Mechanical, Building Monitoring and Control.

Tracking and trending operational characteristics.

Must understand the Datacenter environment and excel in customer service

Follows all safety protocols and provides instruction to other datacentre operations personnel in the safe operation of mission critical facilities equipment.

Ability to work in a Team Atmosphere

Ability to communicate intelligently and effectively with contractors who perform maintenance or upgrade work on these systems.

Ability to learn quickly and address issues as they arise during normal working hours or when on call.

Ability to learn quickly, works autonomously, and addresses any issues that arise day or night

A willingness to provide on call support in case of emergencies or other off hours issues at the facilities

Strong verbal and written communication skills

Minimum Requirements:

An associate degree, trade school certification, or other verifiable training in Mechanical Engineering.

Two or more years at journeyman or technician level, or the equivalent in a mission critical environment (preference given to Datacenter, hospital, or power plant experience).

Two or more years of field experience in Datacenter construction and implementation, field engineering, testing or Datacenter facility operations.

Excellent understanding of the mechanical and electrical systems used in a datacentre environment, including: Chillers, Air Handling Unit, CRAH, Pumps, Feeders, Transformers, Generators, Switchgear, UPS systems, ATS/STS units... etc.

Licensed in one or more technical fields related to datacentre facility systems (Licensed Refrigeration Mechanic, HVAC Technician, Operating Engineer, etc.)

Knowledge and Skills

Demonstrates knowledge of mechanical, electrical and construction trades, health & safety.

Demonstrates technical capabilities in respective discipline.

Demonstrates ability to use and apply test equipment to complex, HVAC Datacenter facility systems.

Demonstrates ability to work on HVAC & mechanical systems in conformity with OSHA safety standards and generally accepted industry practices.
