About the Platform Product Group:

Our engineers work to build a trusted, scalable, and compliant platform that operates with speed, efficiency, and quality. We build and maintain the critical platforms that support Coinbase s core services, including teams focused on Product Foundations (Identity, Payment, Risk, Proofing & Regulatory), Machine Learning, Customer Experience, and Infrastructure.

The Role:

As a Machine Learning Engineer at Coinbase, you will play a pivotal role in constructing essential infrastructure for the open financial system. You will work with diverse data sources, including the blockchain, to ensure millions of users can access cryptocurrency safely while detecting and preventing malicious entities. Additionally, your work will involve applying machine learning to enhance user experiences, such as improving recommendations, risk assessments, chatbots, and more.

What You ll Be Doing:

• Apply cutting-edge machine learning techniques, including deep learning, large language models (LLMs), and graph neural networks, to solve a variety of challenges (fraud detection, recommendation systems, targeting, chatbots, blockchain mining, etc.).
• Develop and deploy robust, scalable, and low-maintenance ML solutions in production.
• Build and maintain tools and infrastructure to democratize machine learning resources across Coinbase, fostering a culture of ML adoption and innovation.

What We Look For in You:

• 5+ years of industry experience as a machine learning and software engineer.
• Strong background in building backend systems at scale, focusing on data processing, machine learning, and analytics.
• Experience with at least one ML model: LLMs, GNN, deep learning, logistic regression, gradient boosting trees, etc.
• Proficiency in one or more of the following areas: data mining, information retrieval, advanced statistics, natural language processing, or computer vision.
• A commitment to Coinbase s core cultural values: positive energy, clear communication, curiosity, and being a builder.

Nice to Haves:

• BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Data Mining, Statistics, or a related technical field.
• Familiarity with Apache Airflow, Spark, Flink, Kafka/Kinesis, Snowflake, Hadoop, Hive.
• Experience with Python and relevant ML frameworks.
• Experience with model interpretability and responsible AI practices.
• Strong skills in data analysis and visualization.
