Team Overview
The Database team is a critical component of the Aladdin Platform Operations group, responsible for every aspect of database technology and strategy at BlackRock, across platforms such as Microsoft SQL Server, SAP Sybase ASE / Repserver / IQ, Apache Cassandra, and Oracle.
Job Purpose/ Responsibilities:
The candidate will work closely with BlackRocks Technology Infrastructure teams, such as Unix, Network and Storage, to deploy and configure high performing platforms and also with the Application Development teams to design, analyze and tune the applications that execute code on the dataservers. Operationally, the team forms a tight knit group of issue management specialists with Client Technology Services and Production Operations.
In addition, the team focuses heavily on programming and automation, writing web tools and applications in Perl, Python, Javascript / JQuery Java and Korn Shell to monitor and visually analyze every aspect of performance associated with the dataservers under their control.
Key responsibilities of the candidate are as follows:
- Operational support of a wide variety of database technology
- Log issues as they are raised
- Assess issues for severity, troubleshoot proactively and notify key stakeholders
- Focus on service impact and timely resolution of critical investment system issues
- Escalate outages and manage the outage until services is restored
- Coordinate with external vendor technology support
- Once issues are resolved in the short term, focus on long term root cause remediation
- Project based participation
- Plan and deploy major migrations and upgrades
- Benchmark new technologies
- Creatively implement new product features
- Mentor and train junior colleagues in technical matters
- Analyze the performance profiles of our dataservers
- Data captures to enable ever more in-depth analysis
- Historical investigations
- Trending to make proactive recommendations on hardware and configuration
- Contribute to our software toolset
- Web tools written in Javascript / JQuery
- Monitoring and maintenance utilities in Perl and Java
Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree in computer science or related IT field preferred
- 7+ years of experience in a technology role, preferably in financial services
- 7+ years of experience of SQL, Sybase ASE or an alternate RDBMS administration is required
- Good exposure to SQL, Sybase RepServer administration is required
- Experience on Apache Cassandra administration is desired
- Experience on different Cloud Platform offerings like Microsoft Azure, Amazon AWS, Google is a plus.
- Exposure on Database Migration across different RDBMS platform is a plus
- Enjoys interactive troubleshooting and support
- Proven ability to understand complex issues
- Prior experience of building relationships with teams in geographically disperse locations
- Self-directed, effective at prioritizing tasks and managing time
- Excellent organization skills and the ability to multitask
- Enjoys a high-pressure environment, troubleshooting time sensitive critical issues and working with people
- Persistent and persuasive; pays attention to details
- Ability to write efficient and maintainable code
