The Eye Bank Technician is responsible for the core responsibilities of the Utah Lions Eye Bank including laboratory maintenance, tissue evaluation and tissue distribution. The Eye Bank Technician is required to be trained and capable of performing front line essential duties such as coordinator of potential donors and recovery of donor tissue and is responsible to perform those tasks as needed.
Performing slit lamp biomicroscopy and specular microscope evaluation on tissue.
Review all tissue requests submitted into the facility database for accuracy and completeness; process daily by assessing appropriateness of match between donor and recipient.
Evaluate, assess, and prioritize all tissue requests with available tissue and allocate appropriate tissue with request.
Coordinate and communicate all distribution and allocation requests with the Executive and Technical Directors to assure accuracy of tissue distribution along with packaging and shipping.
Prepare tissue information packet for surgeons and assure that packet accompanies all tissue distributed by the facility.
Perform OME checks, as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
Associates degree in biology, chemistry or other scientific disciplines in a related field or equivalency required. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required. Certification as an Eye Bank Technician, Ophthalmic Technician or Tissue Bank Specialist is preferred. Experience with aseptic technique and medical terminology also preferred.
